Have you received a phone call from a person claiming to be an IRS agent and trying to collect money? You have likely been a part of a nationwide scam that is growing. The IRS impersonators have been very aggressive in their attempts to receive payment for taxes owed. They will provide you with fake names, IRS identification badge numbers and will even leave a message that is urgent.

The callers may demand money from you, say you have a refund due or try to get your personal information. Your caller id may even show that it is the IRS calling.

There are five easy ways to quickly identify if the call from the IRS is a fake.

  1. Calls that demand an immediate payment. The IRS will contact you by mail first and not call to demand payment.
  2. Demands for payment without being able to question or appeal an amount due. The IRS will send a bill by mail which will allow you to question and/or appeal the amount due.
  3. Phone calls that require you to use a specific payment like a prepaid debit card.
  4. Asking for credit card numbers over the phone.
  5. If the caller threatens to notify the police and have you are arrested for not paying.

What can you do if you believe you have been targeted by a scam? First, if you owe taxes or believe that you might, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and talk to an IRS agent.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (www.tigta.gov) is collecting information on the IRS Impersonation Scam and there is a report available to fill out on their website.

Also, remember that the IRS does not contact you by email or any other social media outlet to discuss you personal tax return.
